It’s coming…

October 2, 2011

When my sister and I were little, my mom had one rule about Halloween:  No talking about, or working on, your costume before October 1st.  Although my sister and I generally respected this rule, there were still many August and September nights where I lay awake debating what the best costume would be.  I would go back and forth countless times before that fateful first day of October, where I felt that I had to be ready to make a big pronouncement about my choice.

Now, I consider myself extremely lucky to have a job where dressing up for Halloween is not only allowed, but highly encouraged!  There’s a special assembly the last Friday before Halloween where everybody dresses up, and for the last two years, I’ve been the driving force behind some great group costumes.  In 2009, I went as Dorothy in a Wizard of Oz posse; last year, as Yoshi in a large Super Mario Brothers cadre (pictures will follow eventually, but there are a lot of people on whom to photoshop scientists)!

Both of those times, however, I broke my mother’s one Commandment (and you know how that usually turns out)–I started in August and worked exclusively on those costumes, not finishing until the last moment.  And although the results were spectacular, I decided that this year I’d rather be able to dedicate some time to other projects during the fall (and delegate a little more)!  So although I decided what I was going to be long before Halloween (and darn you, Krypton, for not agreeing to be an Angry Bird), I only ventured out and bought supplies yesterday.  I had my boyfriend, Thor (so nicknamed because of his refrigerator-like physique) along so it didn’t become a “touch everything and spend two hours at JoAnn’s” trip.  Here’s some of what I bought…

So can you tell what I’m going to be?  Here’s a hint–it obeys a few of my Rules for Great Halloween Costumes:

  1. It’s part of a group (Krypton and our colleague and fellow adventurer, E. Chadwick, are doing it with me)
  2. It’s easily recognizable…
  3. It references a movie, book, or some current event.

Guess away!
